Guest Speaker Series: ‘Why a Social Enterprise?’

  • Date:

Venue: Western Lecture Theatre, Leeds Business School

We are pleased to welcome three social entrepreneurs from the local region to talk about their social business ventures.

Bob Cannell, Member Partner – Suma Wholefoods
Suma is a fully democratic 150 member workers’ co-operative based in Elland, West Yorkshire and is the UK’s largest workers’ cooperative.  All cooperative members and employees receive the same net hourly rate of pay, no matter what their job or responsibilities. They sell exclusively vegetarian products and are committed to promoting vegetarianism as an ethical lifestyle choice.

Nathanya Laurent, Founder  – Healing Through Style
Nathanya Laurent is a postgraduate of The University of Leeds and has worked within educational settings and the media industry for over 10 years. Healing Through Style CiC, based in Leeds, is a dynamic social enterprise which provides innovative fashion and style techniques to clients as an aid to boosting self-confidence and self-esteem. They offer a range of exciting services from one to one style consultations to workshops that celebrate and enhance positive self-image.

Caroline Wherrit, Chief Executive – Re:Work
Based in Leeds, Re:work supplies ethically sourced used and new office furniture, and dispose of furniture in a responsible and environmentally-friendly way. They re-use good quality office furniture, and recycle unsuitable office furniture, stopping it going into landfill. As a social enterprise they aim to ensure the business helps the environment and the local community, as well as providing great customer service. They plough their profits straight back into the business, to grow and create more employment and placement opportunities for local people

Each panel member will talk (for 5-10 minutes) about their business and why they chose to pursue enterprise with a social aim. At the end we will take questions from the floor and there will then be a chance to mix with students.
