Unpacking family heterogeneity of family businesses in emerging economies

This project seeks to examine the complexity of family businesses in emerging countries by unpacking the heterogeneity of families. Family businesses form a large number of businesses in emerging economies and internationally. However, the research in these economies is still scarce. The Centre for Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Studies at Leeds University Business School would be interested in PhD proposals looking at the complexity of family businesses in emerging countries

While research has focused towards defining a family business and differentiating them from nonfamily firms, there is growing recognition of the heterogeneity of family firms. One reason for this is the family dimension and their different configurations as well as the context where they operate.

As such, the purpose of this project is to examine family businesses in emerging economies. In particular, studies that adopt the ‘family’ as unit of analysis to unpack the heterogeneity of families and the implications this has for the family business but also for the business family, entrepreneurial family or family entrepreneurial team. Building on family science, family business and family entrepreneurship research, we look for studies that capture heterogeneity through family structures (e.g. marriage), functions (e.g. employment), interactions (e.g. communication patterns) and/or events (e.g. divorce, death).
