Projects with Impact
At the heart of this year's agenda is the continuation of SkillBridge, which is the flagship initiative designed to support individuals experiencing homelessness by offering temporary employment opportunities at the Leeds University Union.
The chosen workers will sell products such as smoothies and sandwiches, with profits split between reinvestment and income for the SkillBridge team, creating a sustainable model that mixes entrepreneurship and volunteering together.
In addition to SkillBridge, Alec is introducing a university-wide business-making event that invites students to develop proposals based on causes that they care about, ranging from period poverty to environmental sustainability. The initiative is designed to spark creativity and broaden engagement, allowing students to explore entrepreneurship as a tool for change.
A Standout Moment
One of Alec's standout moments from last year was representing Enactus Leeds at the Regional Competition in Manchester. The event brought together university teams from across the North - including Huddersfield and Hull - and gave students the opportunity to present their project ideas to a panel of industry professionals.
The experience offered valuable insight into how social enterprise initiatives are evaluated at a national level and helped shape Alec's understanding of what makes a project both impactful and scalable.
From Lecture Hall to Committee
Alec's academic background has played a key role in shaping his approach to leadership. Skills developed through his economics degree, such as analytical writing, data handling in Excel and understanding team dynamics, have translated well into his work with Enactus.
For example, Alec's exposure to Excel and analytical writing has enabled him to approach project planning with a structured and data-driven mindset. These skills proved valuable in refining the operational model behind, from budgeting and profit allocation to evaluating the project's long-term sustainability.
Exposure to students from creative degrees, such as Media Studies, gave Alec the opportunity to use tools such as Canva, which helped to further enhance the society's outreach and branding within its projects.
Building a Stronger Community
Alec is committed to creating a vibrant and welcoming environment where students feel empowered to lead their own projects and events. ENACTUS Leeds offers a wide range of benefits to its members, including access to exclusive events, opportunities to develop interpersonal skills and the chance to build connections with other students through fun socials.
The society's calendar for the upcoming semester is packed with engaging activities such as a pizza social at Old Bar, a business-making workshop, a zero-waste cooking session, office visits, and a big sale event focused on project upscaling and management. These events are designed to bring students together, build practical skills and showcase the real-world impact of social enterprise.
The Centre for Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Studies is proud to support student-led initiatives like ENACTUS Leeds, where enterprise is used not just to drive profit but also to change lives
