Frankie Potter - BSc Biotechnology with Enterprise

Date

After noticing the headlines on this field of study, Frankie was looking at biotechnology degrees when she came across the Biotechnology with Enterprise degree at the University of Leeds. ‘I didn’t want to do straight biotechnology so this seemed like a great option.’

Now in her final year she shares her experiences from having been on the degree. ‘I really enjoy enterprise since I’m doing something more creative; this is a good marriage between an up and coming sector and enterprise which adds a great element to it.’

Coming from an entrepreneurial family background, she values the enterprise element of her degree. ‘Even if you don’t start your own business, it’s good to know how a business works.’ She enjoys the freedom that this degree offers to be creative but also the guidance given to make her ideas a success.

Most of her enterprise modules are interactive workshops and she comments how refreshing it is to have a balance of lectures and more interactive classes. These modules have allowed learning about the fundamentals of business, its models and strategy.

For her final year enterprise project, Frankie has some exciting new ideas. One of them is selling an affordable university start-up pack which would include all the essentials a student needs such as bedding and cutlery. Another one is to revamp the recycling system by introducing really big trash bins at the end of the street that can be used by all the houses on that street.

Whilst completing a summer internship with PA Consulting, Frankie was able to put her degree into practice by using scenario planning tools to predict the future of personalised healthcare. Her enterprise and business skills came into use whilst working on consulting. Having done a lot of presentations during her business modules, she was confident to give one at the end of her internship about the work she had completed. She also had the opportunity of using tools like PESTLE and market analysis in a real life scenario.

For her time at PA Consulting, Frankie notes: ‘I’ve made some good connections in a friendly environment.’

Frankie is now applying for the MSc in Global Innovation Management which is offered at the Business School as she is keen to spend more time studying here.
